Alcohol or substance use in pregnancy or postpartum can be its own condition, or may be a sign of something more going on, such as perinatal anxiety or depression. The enormous life change of a new baby presents many obstacles that may make a you feel as though you need to cope by engaging in substance use.
Substances may include alcohol, prescribed medication or illicit drugs. Nearly 15% of women with postpartum depression report binge drinking within the first year after having their child. Because of the shame, stigma and guilt associated with substance use, it may feel hard to discuss this behavior or ask for help.
